ABQ’s favorite photo of Adrola Brushi of Albania

Albania – Adrola Dushi – 5’10.5″

Albania ALWAYS sends gorgeous ramp-worthy candidates. I have liked their girls since I began blogging about pageants three years ago. Adrola Dushi, a 19-year-old fashion model from Reshen, is a favorite of Miss Universe official photographer Fadil Berisha who reportedly chose her to represent Albania.

The PLUS: Adrola Dushi has been compared to Sophia Loren and I agree, Albania’s contestant to Miss Universe 2012 has a classic type of beauty that appeals to all ages and lasts thru time. Her height is another major point in her favor.

The MINUS: Her biggest waterloo will be bad styling and a crappy wardrobe. Adrola Dushi must not repeat the looks below unless she wants to win Milkmaid of the Year. Also, keep the bee-stung lips at bay before they get arrested by the police.

My Favorite Photo of Adrola Brushi: happens to be the one above. It’s her official photo on the Miss Universe 2012 website. I like the tawny tigress-feel and the I-just-got-out-of-bed look of her hair as long as they keep that kind of hair for photoshoots only.

Although I liked Lindsay Japal’s photos on the MU Official Site, this is the one that grabs my eyes.

Cayman Islands – Lindsay Japal – 5’9″

Ay! Finally, Cayman Islands sends a stunner that made me say yes, yes, YES, the second I laid eyes on her photos.

The MINUS: Some have said that Lindsay Japal needs some more toning. I noticed that when she’s not aware of the camera, her lack of tone really shows. But when the George Town lass is posing and alert, she looks leaner. But the real MINUS I see is this -  I’m not quite sure if Lindsay Japal fits into Donald Trump’s idea of a Miss Universe winner or even Runner-up. We can all be howling “Cayman Islands” to the moon but if the DT don’t like ‘er, den we in da doghouse.

The PLUS: This half-Grenadian beauty is the best ever Miss Cayman Islands I have seen and although Lindsay Japal did not place in the Miss World 2011 beauty pageant (Filipina Gwen Ruais placed 2nd) the experience will come in handy at Miss Universe 2012. One more thing – When it comes to styling, as long as her hair has body on the top of her head, she can be sporting ANY hairstyle and look fabulous. Lindsay Japal’s stylist will be lucky because there is very little to improve thru contouring or thick make-up. This contestant is naturally beautiful!

My Favorite Photo of Lindsay Japal: is something I found on Tumblr, the pic above. As you can see, she doesn’t need stunning make-up to look stunning!

Okay Lindsay, remember that cameras are everywhere, don't let them catch you slouching off...

Will the winning charisma of Shamcey Supsup (left) and Venus Raj (right) rub off on Janine Tugonon (middle)? Methinks so!

Thanks much to Pia Ranada, Life & Style Reporter for Rappler for quoting Adventures of a Beauty Queen in her article for Janine Tugonon, the Philippines’ representative in the Miss Universe 2012 beauty pageant which is raging on in Las Vegas, USA as I type this up.

In her story, Pia Ranada writes about the pressure for Janine Tugonon to place high, her resemblance to Miriam Quiambao (Miss Universe 1999 1st RU), Janine’s top academic achievements, her faith AND her signature strut called “The Cobra Walk”.

Warm-blooded beauty from the ice cold country of Norway...

Warm-blooded beauty from the ice cold country of Norway…

Norway – Sara Nicole Andersen – 5’7″

Norway is back after skipping the Miss Universe beauty pageant last year. And they sent quite a beautiful candidate with an Iranian/Serbian/Norwegian mix, so that kind of makes up for their absence last year.

The Minus: The most obvious concern is her height. Sara Nicole Andersen stands 5 feet 7 inches; now that’s not such a bad height but she IS facing taller girls who are just a beautiful as she is. The two less obvious concerns – she is still a child and a spoiled brat at that. Two years ago, Sara Nicole Andersen starred in a reality show in Norway about ‘Golden Kids’ who are pampered by their parents. Her mother would give her a party allowance of $2,500 a month so that Sara Nicole could rent limousines, drink and party with her friends! Her most famous TV quote was “Girls deserve money. What would the world do without us?”

It’s been two years since the show and I’m wondering if Sara Nicole has grown up…

The Plus: Well, Sara Nicole Andersen says she has grown up and learned from the show. She says the experience inspired her to get a job and so she is now using her own money. If that is true then she’s going into the Miss Universe with all the lessons she learned from the show including (I hope) discipline which is SO important in the beauty queen life! As regards her beauty, her Persian blood gives her the most captivating eyes and loveliest light coffee skin tone. She’s a young wild beauty, not perfectly polished. But for me, that gives her an edge…

Oh, did I mention that Sara Nicole Andersen is a fire-eater? Too bad they don’t have a Talent Portion in Miss Universe!

My favorite photo of Sara Nicole Andersen: is the one above which is found on her official Miss Universe page. I just hate the bejeweled corset she is wearing. It looks like tacky armor, one size bigger. But the smile, the eyes and the hair – just gorgeous!

Is Sara Nicole Andersen her Mom's little princess or is she a queen of the universe?

Beautiful Janine Tugonon, untamed and totally Pinay!

Beautiful Janine Tugonon, untamed and totally Pinay!

Philippines – Janine Tugonon – 5’9″

With the stellar performance of the Philippines in Miss Universe the past two years, will Janine Tugonon be able to meet high expectations? I believe so! Her determination combined with her natural Pinay beauty and almost 20 months of training will surely stun Donald Trump and the international panel of judges.

The Minus: Her accuracy in English still needs brushing up. Thankfully, this is a very small minus.

The Plus: She might not be accurate in English but she is fluent and makes sense. (Fluency simply means being able to talk straight without stopping to think about what to say next.) IMHO, making sense is far more superior to having perfect grammar and pronunciation. This girl is VERY intelligent and if you check out Janine Tugonon’s biography you’ll see that she graduated with cum laude honors so she’s no empty-headed beauty! Another plus: among all the dark and morena beauties in Miss Universe, Janine Tugonon is easily Top 1 if not Top 3. She has fierce stage presence, a gorgeous face, a tight body (she lost a layer of fat just for Miss U) and a lovely personality!

Two more pluses – With last year’s Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup (who placed 4th in Miss U 2011) as the web-host, the Philippines has favor. And don’t forget DT’s condo involvement in the Philippines!

My Favorite Photo of Janine Tugonon: I really like Janine Tugonon’s lingerie shot above which you can find on the Miss Universe website. Beautiful, wild, sexy and untouchable!

Janine Tugonon lost much weight for the Miss Universe 2012. The one-peice photo was taken during the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 and the two-piece shot was taken most recently, during the Miss Universe 2012

Flab to FAB! The one-piece photo of Janine Tugonon (right) was taken 7 months ago! The photo on the left is how she looks like now!

Beautiful, fresh, fun, elegant, gorgeous, bubbling, sunny... can't think of enough words to describe Irene Esser of Venezuela!

Beautiful, fresh, fun, elegant, gorgeous, bubbling, sunny… can’t think of enough words to describe Irene Esser of Venezuela!

Venezuela – Irene Sofia Esser Quintero – 5’10.5″

Once again, Venezuela proves that its #1 export is beauty queens by sending to the Miss Universe 2012, Irene Esser Quintero – a tall, tan and lovely contender that is making our heads turn! Mine is positively spinning because I can only handle so much beauty in one human, lol!

The Minus: I have noticed that the hips of this cacao haciendera are not symmetrical – the right hip seems to be higher and more squarish than the left one. Facially, she can sometimes be a little too strong for my taste. Like when she is over-smiling during jubilant moments. But it could also be due to too much contouring by her make-up artist. Strong features plus strong make-up can be overwhelming.

The Plus: You put on a sash that says Venezuela and your beauty levels-up in a wondrous manner. IMHO, this is a good thing. But for me, its not only about sash factor. With or without it, Irene Esser Quintero has a beautiful winner’s face that exudes innocence, fun and elegance all at the same time. In the minus paragraph above, I pointed out her uneven hips but that is so easy to fix – just pose strategically and then capture the judges eyes with your dancing eyes. Something that should be easy as pie for any Miss Venezuela!

My Favorite Photo of Irene Esser Quintero: is the one above where she looks so feminine. Her styling is just right in the photo and is perfect for the pre-pageant meeting with judges.

Notice the square right hip on the photo on the left? But with smart posing, like on the right, it's easily dealt with!

ABQ's Miss Universe 2012 Top 12 - Top Row L-R: Albania, Cayman Islands, China, Croatia. Middle Row: Kosovo, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway. Bottom Row: Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia and Venezuela

ABQ’s Miss Universe  TWELVE for TWENTY-TWELVE – L-R Starting from Top Row: Albania, Cayman Islands, China, Croatia, Kosovo, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia and Venezuela – these choices are based on online photos.

After days of poring over photos of the contestants in this year’s Miss Universe 2012, here is my list of favorites for the crown. I chose this set purely on photos and feel. I also took into account comments from pageant fans. I know that some may notice that I don’t have any of the African girls in my choices but I do have a couple in my next list which is based purely on the web interviews. The Europeans and Latin American countries just sent so many photogenic girls this year!

You may also notice that I have only 12 in this list. That’s 3 girls short of the Top 15 names that will be announced on coronation night, Dec. 19, 2012. (There will be a Top 16 girl chosen via internet votes.) Why only 12? As I said, these 12 were chosen by me based on photos and feel. If my feelings kept saying ‘yes’ with every photo I saw then I would put her in my Top List. And only 12 girls elicited such consistent ‘yesses’ in my heart.

I do have a list of contestants whose videos excited me to no end and that list is a bit different from this one. That list should be out by today or tomorrow!

ABQ’s FINAL Top 15 Choices in Miss Universe 2012!

$

0

Okay. This IS the FINAL list. I am exhausted after all the deciding but very happy with my choices. BTW, this list will be featured in Rappler, I’m so thrilled!

Now… there were SIX girls that consistently scored high with me in their photos (professional and candid shots), web interview, gown competition and swimsuit competition. I tried hard but couldn’t pare them down to five. I am a terrible judge!

Here goes:  (in alphabetical order)

1) Cayman Islands – Lindsay Japal

Lindsay Japal of Cayman Islands MU2012

Lindsay Japal of Cayman Islands MU2012

Cayman Islands doesn’t really have a track record in Miss Universe but Lindsay Japal will most likely break that silence. She has that American appeal combined with Island flavor. And the best thing about her is that she doesn’t seem to know just how sexy she is!

2) Kosovo- Diana Avdiu

Diana Avdiu of Kosovo MU2012

Diana Avdiu of Kosovo MU2012

Diana Avdiu is already a winner in the Miss Universe 2012 with the Miss Photogenic award in her clutches. And may I just say that she deserves it? Her photos take my breath away. She also happens to remind me of Catherine Zeta Jones and would make a fine Miss Universe.

3) Mexico -Karina Gonzales

Karina Gonzalez of Mexico MU2012

Karina Gonzalez of Mexico MU2012

Well, lets hope we don’t get knocked out again by Mexico! Karina Gonzales is obviously going for the crown like a prize fighter. Her smile, which is brighter than the lights of Las Vegas, is her winning asset. Unfortunately, she’s not smiling in this photo, but if you click here, you’ll see what I mean!

 4) Philippines – Janine Tugonon

Janine Tugonon of the Philippines MU2012

Janine Tugonon of the Philippines MU2012

It is not impossible for Janine Tugonon to come home this Christmas with the crown as a gift for the Philippines. Just like our two previous queens Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj who placed in the Top 5 of Miss Universe, Janine is vivacious, stunning in photos, regal on stage and has a fantastic body!

5) Puerto Rico – Bodine Koehler

Bodine Koehler of Puerto Rico MU2012

Bodine Koehler of Puerto Rico MU2012

Bodine Koehler is a complete package – angelic face, divine body, height of 6 feet… all of that spells G-O-D-D-E-S-S! The extra plus is that she sings, plays the piano and dances. I believe that selecting a Miss U winner who can perform for the public CAN translate into extra revenue which matters to Donald Trump.

6) Venezuela -Irene Esser

Irene Sofia Esser Quintero of Venezuela MU2012

Irene Sofia Esser Quintero of Venezuela MU2012

You put on a sash that says Venezuela and your beauty levels-up in a wondrous manner. IMHO, this is a good thing. But for me, its not only about sash factor. With or without it, Irene Esser has a beautiful winner’s face that exudes innocence, fun and elegance all at the same time.

The girl that is the biggest threat to the 6 I mentioned above is…

7) Croatia -Elizabeta Burg

Elizabeta Burg of Croatia MU2012

Elizabeta Burg of Croatia MU2012

I wasn’t satisfied with her swimsuit shots. However, I have to say that she is one of the prettiest faces in this batch of queens. Elizabeta Burg projects like Snow White. Beautiful enough to overcome any shortcomings (or short-legged-ness) and enter the Top 5!

My next set of favorites: (In alphabetical order)

8) Albania -Adrola Dushi

Adrola Dushi of Albania MU2012

Adrola Dushi of Albania MU2012

Adrola Dushi has been compared to Italian actress Sophia Loren and I agree, Albania’s contestant to Miss Universe 2012 has a classic type of beauty that appeals to all ages and lasts thru time. The only trouble is that she’s a little too laid back for a pageant as competitive as Miss Universe.

9) Aruba -Liza Helder

Liza Helder of Aruba MU2012

Liza Helder of Aruba MU2012

When I choose my favorites I always look at photos first. And I was not attracted to Liza Helder’s shots, specially her early Miss Aruba photos. But when I saw her web interview, I quickly changed my assessment. She is attractive, gorgeous and smart!

10) China – Ji Dan Xu (Diana Xu)

Ji Dan Xu of China MU2012

Ji Dan Xu of China MU2012

Beauty should be beyond politics so I’m going to act like the territorial issue between us and them isn’t happening. Anyway, I like Diana Xu (Ji Dan Xu) because there is a certain charm about her. I love her height (5’11″) and her warm smile which I believe are her best assets.

11) Ecuador -Carolina Andrea Aguirre Perez

Carolina Andrea Aguirre Perez of Ecuador MU2012

Carolina Andrea Aguirre Perez of Ecuador MU2012

Initially, I was not impressed with Carolina Andrea Aguirre Perez’ photos although I thought she was cute. I started singing a different song when I saw her in action in the web interview and the evening gown competition. Ecuador is a charmer!

12) Jamaica -Chantal Jaky

Chantal Zaky of Jamaica MU2012

Chantal Zaky of Jamaica MU2012

Out of all the Ebony Queens in this year’s batch, Jamaica is THE standout. Although I find her styling to be a little strong (too much contouring) you can’t put a beautiful woman like Chantal Jaky down.

13) Malaysia – Kimberly Leggett

Kimberly Legget of Malaysia MU 2012

Kimberly Legget of Malaysia MU 2012

Kimberly Legget is the only beauty queen in Miss Universe 2012 that smoulders on stage. That’s what convinced me to put her in my list!

14) Thailand – Nutpimon Farida Waller

Farida Waller of Thailand MU2012

Farida Waller of Thailand MU2012

Nutpimon Farida Waller captured my heart with her Cupid bow lips. Just a little bit more angst or edge and she can make the semi-finals, at least!

15) Russia -Elizabeta Golovanova

Elizabeth Gologanova of Russia MU2012

Elizabeth Gologanova of Russia MU2012

Her critics have assailed her for her over-powering long hair and uneven teeth. And they do have a point. I like Elizabeta Golovanova anyway because of the stunning fashion shots they took of her in Miss Universe. Just look at the photo above. Kitang-kita ang kanyang kagandahan!

My Dark Horse Collection: (In no particular order)

1) Norway -Sara Nicole Andersen

Sara Nicole Andersen of Norway MU2012

Sara Nicole Andersen of Norway MU2012

If the judges like women with child-like beauty then Sara Nicole Andersen could bust into the Top 16!

2) Belgium – Laura Beyne

Laura Beyne of Aruba MU2012

Laura Beyne of Aruba MU2012

Laura Beyne has one of the sweetest smiles and for me has the most doll-like face among the Ebony Queens.

3) Angola – Marcelina Vahekeni

Marcelina Vahekeni of Angola MU2012

Marcelina Vahekeni of Angola MU2012

Marcelina Vahekeni with her simple walk in the Evening Gown Competition was tops! Lovely and queenly. But succeeding Leila Lopes (the current Miss Universe who represented Angola last year) is going to be tough!

4) Curacao -Monifa Joanne Marie Jansen

Monifa Joanne Marie Jansen of Curacao MU2012

Monifa Joanne Marie Jansen of Curacao MU2012

For me Monifa Joanne Marie Jansen had the best projection in the Evening Gown Competition. She is a stronger version of our very own Angel Aquino.

5) Guyana -Ruqayyah Boyer

Ruaqyyah Boyer of Guyana MU2012

Ruaqyyah Boyer of Guyana MU2012

Could her Miriam Quiambao-like fall at the Prelims of Miss Universe 2012 and her graceful save propel her into the semi-finals? It’s possible. Ruqayyah Boyer has class and she shows it!

6) Paraguay -Egni Eckert

Egni Eckert of Paraguay MU2012

Egni Eckert of Paraguay MU2012

Oh what a feisty Latina! Egni Eckert caught my attention when I saw her glowing like an iced ember in the Evening Gown Competition.

7) USA -Olivia Culpo

Olivia Culpo of the USA MU2012

Olivia Culpo of the USA MU2012

I have trouble with Olivia Culpo, this year’s Miss USA, I am so wanting to include her in my list – she’s beautiful, smart, sexy etc. but I just don’t feel the X-factor. However, USA does have the sash-factor so there’s a mighty chance that she’ll enter the semi-finals in spite of what I feel.

Mom, the Wind Beneath my Bb. Pilipinas Crown!

Me at age 5 (I think) with my Mom (isn't she just gorgeous). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point...

Toddler-me with my Mom (isn’t she just gorgeous?). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point…

Every time I run into friends who know me from my beauty queen days, they never fail to ask me, “How’s your Mom?”

Mom was my shadow then, but unlike regular shadows, she was feisty and talked a lot; anyone who met her would never forget her. Delia F. Burton is her name and she has been based in Honolulu for the past decade, far, faaar away from me. How I miss her so much!!!

Happy Mother’s Day Mom, I love you forever!!!

I never really wanted to become a beauty queen. That was the last thing on my mind when I was a teenager. I was boyish and walked like the famous movie pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow. Climbing trees and racing with boys was my idea of fun! Even when I got my first period (which depressed me, by the way), I still kept my rough and tough ways. My dream was to work in the world of men and become a top surgeon or an officer in the US Army just like my Dad, Col. Charles V. Burton. I even harbored dreams of becoming an Astronaut.

But Mom, she had other ideas. Somehow she saw showbiz potential in me and made sure to cultivate it by sending me to ballet, hula and modern jazz classes. Although I never got far with dance classes in terms of becoming professional, the classes taught me how to move gracefully so I could automatically switch between my gangly swagger and my graceful walk depending on what the situation called for.

MEETING MY FIRST MOVIE MOGUL: MANAY ICHU OF SAMPAGUITA FILMS

But my foray into showbiz didn’t really start until the early 80s when Sampaguita Films launched a huge campaign in search of actors for the movie Batch ’81. I was barely 13 years old when Mom sent in my photos – one whole body shot and a close-up (styling by Reggie Regalado). Amazingly, we received a callback from Sampaguita Films for an audition!

So we drove to the place which was located near Ortigas Avenue on one of the side streets; it turned out to be this huge piece of property that looked more like a garden or a forest. That’s where I met “Manay Ichu” or Marichu Vera-Perez Maceda, the daughter of Jose “Doc” Perez, owner of Sampaguita Films.

Her first reaction to me: “Oh, you’re really… YOUNG!”

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

I certainly was very young at the time. On the cusp of womanhood. Not ready to surrender my Jackstones and Chinese Garter and yet excited at the prospect of doing things that only the gown-ups did.

The audition turned out to be a disaster, although I don’t think I realized it then. The scene required me to rush down a grand flight of steps (inside the big mansion of Sampaguita Films) and then have a semi-dramatic discussion with my co-auditionee Charlie Ysmael (who eventually became a TV newscaster for RPN9). But I was only 13 or 14, with NO experience in acting whatsoever and no idea about college frats and violent hazing, which the movie Batch ’81 was all about. In the end, Manay Ichu felt that I was… well… too young for the film but she wanted to ‘save’ me for perhaps a future project.

To this day, I maintain that my audition was terrible but Mom… she tells a different story. In her eyes, I was fabulous and beautiful and should have won a Famas Award for it! It was that kind of faith – the one that could see my potential even if others and I couldn’t see it – that eventually propelled me to win Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985.

But I am rushing ahead of myself. Let me backtrack a bit…

MEETING MOTHER LILY OF REGAL FILMS

After Sampaguita Films, I tried auditioning for Eat Bulaga (I don’t remember what for, but the audition was held at Horseshoe Drive in Quezon City). Nothing came out of that. Mom, who was getting bolder and bolder as the days went by, decided one day to just show up at the house of Mother Lily Monteverde, the famous owner of Regal Films. And guess what! We got an audience with her! Mom’s persistence paid off and it seemed like Mother Lily liked me enough to introduce me to some of the directors and actors in her fold.

After a couple meetings, Mother Lily offered us a 10-film contract starting with, “Bata pa si ‘Sabel,” a coming-of-age movie about a young girl with two boys in her life . But Mom had a major, major problem with it – I had to do kissing scenes and bed scenes; something she did not agree with. Mom stepped on the brakes and the movie went to Snookie Serna who starred across Albert Martinez and the late Joel Alano who tragically died at age 21 because of a heart attack (of all things!)

That girl on the Hammock (Snooky Serna) would've been me if I had signed that Regal Films contract!

That girl on the Hammock (Snooky Serna) would’ve been me if I had signed that Regal Films contract!

Photo above from this site!

But Mother Lily was serious about me. Serious enough to include me in a few press releases and in one of Regal Films’ promotional tours. I was introduced as an up-and-coming Regal Baby. So even if there was a stalemate between Mom and Mother Lily, it looked like my movie career was underway.

Or so I thought.

My ‘career’ took an unexpected twist at the presscon of movie “Blue Jeans” which starred Dina Bonnevie. Mom and I were there on invitation of Mother Lily and after the presentation, one of the press people in attendance told her this, “Your daughter looks more like a beauty queen than an actress, you should bring her to Renee Salud.”

That encounter opened a whole new level of excitement in my Mom who suddenly realized that maybe this was what she was looking for! So she got the phone number of Renee and the following day called to set an appointment…

MEETING MAMA RENEE

The Renee Salud Design shop on E. Rodriguez Blvd was small but busy. Mom and I were quietly asked to sit in the receiving room to wait and meet this “Mama Renee” character. There were two mannequins in the store window wearing Filipiniana-inspired outfits and I could hear sewing machines starting and stopping in the backroom.

After a 15 minute wait, in swept Mama Renee Salud – who turned out to be, indeed, a character. Flamboyant does not even begin to describe him! His hands never stopped moving and neither did his mouth. Renee flipped back and forth between gushing over me and telling me that I needed to lose weight and get a tan. It seemed like he had already taken me into his fold, even before Mom had a chance to say yes.

Funny as it seemed, that meeting proved to be pivotal in my life. Little did I know that stepping into his shop would alter my entire future.

MISS YOUNG PHILIPPINES 1981

Mama Renee did not wait long. In a few months, he sent me on my first pageant experience. I was just 14 years old when I was accepted as one of 10 contestants in the Miss Young Philippines 1981 beauty pageant that was held at the Peninsula Hotel in Makati. And because I was very boyish to the point of brutishness, I did not really know how to mingle with the other contestants and ended up treating them all like boys. I would push them, pull their hair or tease them mercilessly. My behavior (which was innocent playfulness on my part) was misunderstood and resulted in a bull-session the night before coronation.

Basically, they ganged up on me. At least that’s how it felt the time. I felt so hurt by the things they said about me but I hid my feelings and pretended that I was okay. We ended the bull-session with my promise to change. Now that I’m little older, I’ve come to realize that the 9 girls just wanted me to change for the better. They wanted me to become more ‘lady-like’.

Me and my court of beauties - Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

Me and my court of beauties – Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

The following night I ended up winning the crown. Honestly, I didn’t know I would win but I did want to win so badly mostly because I am, by nature, very competitive and take all kinds of games, even Patintero, very seriously. So there I was on stage, overjoyed, and at that moment of my victory, I forgot all my promises to change.

In the meantime, my Mom was over the moon! She had been secretly visiting Baclaran Church, praying and walking on her knees til they bled; it was her way of gaining favor with God to make me win. Thankfully, we now both know that the whole ‘penance’ thing was unnecessary; God favors those whom He shall. But I still will never forget the sight of the open wounds on her knees and what they meant to her at the time.

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #1: I WAS UNDER-AGED

I might as well confess it now and come clean. I WAS under-aged when I won.

The manager of my 1st-Runner up sued and the issue was all over the newspapers. Some reports even said I was stripped of my title but I continued on with my duties as Miss Young Philippines 1981 and went on to represent the Philippines in the Miss Young International 1981 beauty pageant where I placed as a semi-finalist.

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left...

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left…

Well, I guess now is the best time to say sorry to pageant fans and to all my co-contestants specially my 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews. If I could turn the clock back and do it all over again, I would have not joined and would have waited until I reached the right age.  I realize that now. But its water under the bridge. All I can do is offer this confession and say that I’m sorry.

NEXT STOP: BB PILIPINAS 1985

Mama Renee wasn’t done with me yet. He said that the Miss Young Philippines was just the first step. The main event was the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant and the goal was either the Universe or the International title. Training for the Bb. Pilipinas involved doing lots of fashion shows and going to lots of parties. I continued dancing

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

(Filipiniana Dance) for the Manila Metropolitan Theater, better known as “The Met” and often worked as a background villager/dancer for Zarzuelas and other musicals presentations at the historical venue. Dancing helped me be graceful and control my severe stage fright.

At one point, I was invited by Pitoy Moreno to become a fashion model for Malacanang Palace. My batch of models included Bessie Badilla, Ana Francisco, Crispy Santamaria (daughter of Pianist Ingrid Santamaria), Roi Vinzon (the actor), Lito Gruet, the late Chat Silayan and Melanie Marquez who was THE favorite of Madame Imelda Marcos.

We basically had one fashion show presentation – it was the guests who changed. Every top foreign dignitary who would visit the Marcoses in the Philippines would be feted with our show. At the end of the program, Imelda Marcos would take the microphone and sing “Feelings” and/or “Dahil Sa ‘Yo” to her guest. The most memorable shows we did were for Indira Gandhi at the PICC and for the foreign actors and directors who came to Philippines for the 1st Manila International Film Fest in 1982. The main show, which was held in Intramuros, was grand and fabulous! The most famous guests to the MIFF that I remember were actors Franco Nero, Ben Kingsley and George Hamilton.

Take note that all throughout my career, Mom was with me. At every rehearsal, show, TV guesting and party, she was by my side, acting like the quintessential stage mom, keeping one eye on her daughter and ten eyes on the wolves. We had an inside joke that Mom was like my bulldog; nobody could get near me when she was around. While I chafed at her constant presence (having her around made it hard to make friends), I knew it was for the best. I was so young and gullible but with my spitfire Mom, no one could mess around with me.

Mom was always by my side! Even in newspaper articles, aahaha!

RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME AND THE CROWN

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985...

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985…

When I turned 18, Mom and I had a big fight – she wanted me to put college on hold so I could join Bb. Pilipinas. I tried to bargain – could I finish two years of college and THEN join the pageant? The answer was no. I tried running away from home but Mom found me within days (such was her network) and I was forced to join the pageant. I had no choice but to join it. But even if I was unhappy to be there, I went for the win, giving it my all. As I said, I am competitive by nature and hate to lose. I went home on coronation night with the Bb. Pilipinas 1985 crown on my head and my face splashed on all the newspapers the next day.

My career was made. As far as Mom and Mama Renee were concerned, I had arrived.

CONFESSIONS OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #2: I WAS NOT A FILIPINO CITIZEN

Alas, my second victory proved to be another problematic one! But since there were no complainants, it did not make it into the news. The problem was, I was a US Citizen and the requirement for Miss Universe was that contestants had to be citizens of the country they were representing. I ended up competing in Miami, Florida anyway. Miss Puerto Rico, Deborah Carthy Deu won while my best friend, Miss USA Laura Martinez Herring (who is now a Hollywood actress) entered the Top 10. I do not know if my citizenship affected my chances at the crown but I left the stage broken-hearted, wishing I had done better.

Im on the far right... this was taken during the Miss Universe 1985 competition...

Im on the far right… this was taken during the Miss Universe 1985 competition…

I do have a consolation. A highly respected pageant website included me in their list (made in 2002) of 50 Most Beautiful Non-Finalists in Miss Universe. When I discovered that list, I couldn’t help but smile til my lips met the back of my head. There were people who still cared about me. (Does anyone have the link to that list? Please leave it in the comments section, I can’t seem to find the site…)

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #3: BITTERNESS AT MOM

A few months after the Miss Universe pageant I rebelled against my parents and left home again. I wanted to lead my life the way I wanted to. And so I did. I escaped from Mom’s authority and enjoyed my freedom but it came at quite a price. My career, which started so well, never really took off and then started to wane.

Here are the reasons why I messed up:

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

First, I didn’t know how to manage myself as a talent. Example – In the 80s, when I got a permanent slot on Chika Chika Chicks (the sitcom that used to be called Chicks to Chicks which also starred beauty queens Lorraine Schuck and Bong Dimayacyac) I would come to work late; like two hours late. My reason? Since the main stars were always late, I could be late too.

The nerve of me, huh?

Second, I made lots of choices based on emotions and not wisdom. I only did what I felt like doing. So instead of investing in my career, I just enjoyed my money, spent time with friends, went to parties and just had a good time, all the time.

Third, I still had trouble getting along with people. And I couldn’t handle criticism from directors and choreographers. I took things too personally and felt defeated by their correction of me even if outside I looked confident. I expected praise because anything less meant I wasn’t good enough. I held myself to an impossible standard at every fashion show or TV job instead of turning them into learning experiences.

All three made a recipe for disaster. While no real disaster happened, NOTHING was happening to my career, which is I guess, some kind of a disaster anyway. My career was going nowhere. I was floating like a jellyfish in a cold ocean with not a single muscle to move me in the right direction. I began to unjustly blame Mom for bringing me into the world of showbiz and grew very bitter.

It took more than 15 years and the preaching of one pastor before I understood how bitterness, and the resulting unforgiveness I had for her, were dragging me down. I forget who the Pastor was, but he was from Victory Christian Fellowship in Pasig. The teaching was centered on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:21-35. He outlined its symptoms and then prescribed the pill of forgiveness. I cried because I suddenly realized that I was a pitiable victim of bitterness.

It was then that I regretted leaving Mom. If I had not left home, my career would have blossomed, for sure! Mom was a such great manager. But God is wonderful because he used the bad that I did and turned it into a lesson for me to learn. I cannot complain with the blessings I have today, in spite of the bad behavior I had in the past.

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia...

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia…

So I took action. I sat down with my journal and wrote down two names – my Mom’s and another person whom I just could not forgive. I sat there and prayed saying: “I cannot forgive you on my own strength but I can forgive you through Jesus Christ.”

And then I enumerated the reasons why I was hurt by them and forgave them for each one. I also wrote down a goal: Not to say anything bad about them. In my Mom’s case, I also decided that each time someone asked me about her, I would say at least one good thing about her. I prayed the prayer everyday and stayed faithful to my goal. In a few weeks, I could feel the seed of forgiveness planted in my heart, growing tendrils of peace, giving me life and releasing me from the burden of bitterness.

RECONCILIATION WITH MOM

Although things are not perfect between Mom and I (we still argue and fight sometimes), it is now easy to say, “I love you!” Those words were SO INCREDIBLY hard to say to her during my years of bitterness. In fact, I never said them for a loooong time and neither did Mom. But I clearly remember the first time I said those words again, as an adult – it was in the back of an airport bus that had just picked us up from our plane and was taking us to the Ninoy Aquino International Terminal. A strong feeling of love suddenly gripped me and I just had to lean over and hug her and say, “I love you, Mom!” She hugged me back so tightly saying that she loved me too. My tears would not stop flowing.  At the time, I didn’t know where that feeling came from but now I believe God’s Spirit had something to do with it. That day is definitely up there in my list of “Best Days in My Life.”

Me with Mom, just bumming around on a remote island near Iloilo. We were in town because of a fashion show...

Me with Mom, just bumming around on a remote island near Iloilo. We were in town because of a fashion show…

Years after this, I was asked to share my testimony at church and I talked about my old bitterness against Mom. In the middle of that testimony, I blurted this out without thinking: “Mom was right. I was not meant to be a doctor. I was meant to be a beauty queen. Besides, there are so many doctors out there, pero iilan lang ang Bb. Pilipinas winners!”

(To all you wonderful Doctors reading this, please don’t ban me from your clinics, I can’t live without you, aahaha!)

So to my Mom, on Mother’s Day, I am thankful that YOU are my Mom!

Without your pushing and prodding, I would not be enjoying the beauty queen life I have today! So, for all the heartaches I caused you, I ask for your forgiveness…

I was recently asked why I never joined any of the pageants for married women and moms since I still ‘have what it takes’ daw and I suddenly realized that it was because you aren’t here to be the wind beneath my wings. How could I join any pageant without you behind me? It just wouldn’t be the same. I know I am a grown woman but I still look to you for strength. Up to now, you are my Top Model because you are an outrageously crazy, terribly brave, amazingly tough and wonderfully beautiful woman!

Always remember that the crown that I wear truly belongs to you. I love you!

Happy Mother's Day Mom! I love you!!!

Beautiful smile on Ariella Arida... Could she be the next Miss Universe?

Beautiful smile on Ariella Arida… Could she be the next Miss Universe?

Just got home from Ariella “Ara” Arida’s sendoff party at Gloria Maris restaurant in Gateway, Cubao. I’m exhausted and need to sleep early for an indie film shoot tomorrow so I’ll just tease you with a few photos of what transpired at the event. Just look at how she walked into the room below. Much power in those legs. Boy, those legs are just gorgeous and not an ounce of fat on her body it seems. Can’t wait to see her in a bikini. From what I heard, fitness coach John Jay Cuay worked her so hard that she’s now ripped.  But I still can’t get over her legs….

Ara Arida enters the room at her send off party to Miss Universe 2013…

That is how to walk into ANY place. Most specially the Miss Universe arena. Ariella’s got the moves so I’m quite happy. But unfortunately her signature walk doesn’t really have a catchy name. Ara Arida explains that Bb. Pilipinas opted to call her walk – The Miss Universe Walk – in a bid to claim the title as early as now.

And I was just getting used to the idea of cute names for the queens’ signature walks… oh well…

Ariella says she’s leaving on Monday, October 21, 2013 for a chilly Russia that will range from -2º to 4ºC and maybe even lower as the days go by. Indeed, she’ll have to get used to the cold weather and have a warm wardrobe. I just hope her skin cooperates because changes in temperature and humidity can wreak havoc on the most flawless skin.

Ooooh, another photo of Ariella with her beautifully sculpted long legs. We can only see her shins below but they are magnificent don’t you think?

With the recent victories of Mutya Datul who won Miss Supranational 2013 and Megan Young who won Miss World 2013, Ariella Arida faces intense pressure to win the Miss Universe 2013 crown. She has her fair share of detractors (don’t we all?) who have criticized her from the way she speaks to the way she looks. But Ariella Arida is brushing off the bashers because they ain’t good bedfellows and she needs her beauty sleep instead of worrying about what people say about her.

Here’s one more photo of the dusky Laguna lass whose beauty has been described as Latina-ish. For me, Ara reminds me of a young Liza Nakpil, the half-sister of Miss International 1964 Gemma Cruz.

Ariella ARRRIBA ARRIBA!

Ariella ARRRIBA ARRIBA!

OMG, I just love her send-off poster! And before I get any more excited, I’ll now call it a day but I promise you more photos of Ara coming up in the next few days… Goodnighty!

Miss Philippines Universe 2013 Ariella 'Ara' Arida... worthy of a Top 5 placement!

Miss Philippines Universe 2013 Ariella ‘Ara’ Arida… worthy of a Top 5 placement!

Click here to read this article which was originally published in Rappler.

CHIANG RAI, Thailand – With the crucial Miss Universe prelims are done, here’s ABQ’s list of who’s hot and — who’s not.

It seems the Latinas are grabbing most of the attention. They are a force to reckon with this 2013, with most of them resembling Barbie in the flesh. The downside? Well…all Barbies tend to look alike.

The Europeans, meantime, pose the biggest threat to a Latina win; but don’t be surprised if an Asian or Eurasian snatches the prize. The weakest group would be the blonde contingent with only 2 or 3 who fall into the “bombshell” category.

What about our girl — Ariella “Ara” Arida? What are her chances of winning or, at least, maintaining the Philippines’ excellent performance in Miss Universe with the past 3 queens placing as runners-up?  More thoughts on that below and in this article I wrote for Rappler – “Ariella Arida: Tough Contender in 2013 Miss Universe”)

Here’s my list of Top 21 girls to watch out for:

Top 5

In this interview at the Rappler studios, Ariella Arida herself identified at least 3 girls she believed were her main rivals for the win: Puerto Rico, Spain and France.

1. Puerto Rico – Monic Perez

Monic Perez - Puerto Rico

Monic Perez of Puerto Rico. Elegance personified…

This statuesque 5’10″ nursing degree holder is a classic beauty and one of the front-runners for the crown if we are to go by the lists of most pageant fans. Monic Perez’ best performance IMHO, was during the Evening Gown competition at the prelims, where she wore a yellow gown with her hair up in a high, queenly bun. Her advocacy as a nurse is caring for the elderly.

2. Spain – Patricia Yurena Rodriguez

Patricia Yurena Rodriguez of Spain

Patricia Yurena Rodriguez of Spain. This Spanish girl is sooo FLY!

An interesting beauty, this one. In spite of her angular jaw-line (which reminds me of Mariel de Leon), Patricia Yurena Rodriguez has one of the prettiest faces in this year’s collection of international beauties. Her performance in the prelims was captivating. However, this writer finds her a little too thin for comfort. This 5’8” Tenerife native is a volunteer fund raiser for Red Cross in Madrid.

3. France – Hinarani de Longeaux

Hinarani de Longeaux of France

Hinarani de Longeaux of France. If Angelina and Beyonce had a daughter, this is how she would look like…

Although her Official Miss Universe Web Interview seemed blah, Hinarani de Longeaux made up for it, trés beacoup, during the prelims where she finally let her oooomph ooze out. She’s like an Arabica version of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie or R&B singer Beyonce. This 5’10” Tahitian-French model works for SOS Village Enfant which helps place orphans in new homes.

4. Ukraine – Olga Storozhenko

Olga Storozhenko of Ukraine

Olga Storozhenko of Ukraine

Can you believe that this 5’10” porcelain doll grew up playing with cars? But there’s no sign of boyishness in this elegant beauty now. Olga Storozhenko actually runs a local beauty pageant to raise funds for orphans. Her radiant beauty, which brings to mind actress Jane Seymour, was highlighted in the Official Miss Universe Web Interview and during her self-introduction in the prelims. Now, if only her stylist would stop making her look way older than her 21 years…

5. Philippines – Ariella Arida

Ariella Arida of the Philippines

Ariella Arida of the Philippines. Wanted in Russia!

Just because she’s at the bottom of this Top 5 list doesn’t mean she’s the least in our eyes. While the 4 contestants mentioned above will make it hard for her to win, Ara still has a huge chance of bringing home the 3rd ever Miss Universe crown for the Philippines.

The 5’7” chemistry graduate from Laguna is one of the most in-demand contestants with major sponsors (like Yamamay, Tony Ward, Mercedes Benz and Nobu) always requesting for her to grace their events. Russian singer Emin also included her in a shortlist of 7 contestants to be featured in one of his MTVs.

While some felt she was too muscular-looking during the prelims’ swimsuit competition, these critics may not know that Miss Universe tends to favor “lean, mean, fighting machines.” Out of all the Asian representatives, it’s safe to say that Ariella Arida is clearly number one!

ABQ’s Next 11 favorites rounding up the Top 16:

6. Czech Republic – Gabriela Kratochvílová

Gabriela Kratochvílová of the Czech Republic

Gabriela Kratochvílová of the Czech Republic. Who says girls with long hair are prettier?

Gabriela Kratochvílová proves that not all beauty queens have voluminously long hair. She is, in fact, the first-ever Miss Czech Universe winner with a page-boy cut. In a pre-pageant show, Gabriela was also chosen as the “People’s Bond Girl” by swimsuit sponsor Yamamay.

7. Australia – Olivia Wells

Olivia Wells of Australia

Olivia Wells of Australia. Oi-Oi-Oi!

Could her first name be a good luck charm since she shares it with reigning Miss Universe Olivia Culpo? I don’t believe in luck but it’s fun to speculate. Olivia Wells is the beautiful mind behind the blog The Procrasti-baker. But don’t think for a second that you’ll see cupcakes on her hips! The 5’10” Melbourne miss is fabulously fit. She is also passionate about her charity work and has once flown to Vietnam as a volunteer to help disabled children.

8. Bolivia – Alexia Viruez

Alexia Viruez of Bolivia

Alexia Viruez of Bolivia. Loving every minute of her…

This feline femme consistently delivers in the Miss Universe beauty pageant. From her Web Interview to all her stage moments in the prelims, Alexia Viruez does not disappoint. The 5’8” South American beauty once volunteered to serve rescue workers during a building collapse in her town of Santa Cruz.

9. Haiti – Mondiana J’hainne Pierre

Mondiana J'hanne Pierre of Haiti. Dark. Mysterious. Forbidding...

Mondiana J’hanne Pierre of Haiti. Dark. Mysterious. Forbidding…

Delicate mahogany skin…Flawlessly chiseled face. The most beautiful among the dark queens, Mondiana Pierre evokes memories of a former Miss Universe winner — Leila Lopes of Angola who won in 2011. The 5’10” stunner founded Big Sister, an organization that encourages children in her hometown Port-au-Prince to seek an education.

10. USA – Erin Brady

Erin Brady of the USA

Erin Brady of the USA. Smiling or pouting, she’s amazing!

Could we see a back-to-back win for the USA? I’m sure Erin Brady wouldn’t mind it at all! The best asset of this 5’8” accountant from Connecticut is her gorgeously perfect face.

11. Turkey – Berrin Keklikler

Berrin Kekliker of Turkey. Would love to have her for Thanksgiving...

Berrin Kekliker of Turkey. Would love to have her for Thanksgiving…

What a sweet darling. This animal rescuer was happily laughing away on stage during the swimsuit competition of the prelims! Berrin Kekliker’s smile is much like that of local actress Alma Concepcion, who was also a beauty queen once. I just hope that this 5’10” Turkish delight didn’t lose any points for wearing a gown that looked more like a glorified swimsuit during the prelims.

12. Colombia – Lucia Aldana

Lucia Aldana of Colombia. Those eyes just drive me crazy!

Lucia Aldana of Colombia. Those eyes just drive me crazy!

Owlish à la Anne Hathaway. Abs that belong on the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated. The 5’6” Lucia Aldana might be the shortest on this shortlist of favorites but she has big dreams of producing and directing a government-related TV show.

13. Malaysia – Carey Ng

Carey Ng of Malaysia.

Carey Ng of Malaysia. Ballerina turned Beauty Queen..

The only other stunning Asian (from Asia, I must add) aside from Ariella Arida of the Philippines — is Carey Ng who grew up in Kuala Lumpur. She’s got a sexy vibe and walks like water; but whoever is styling her hair, please, no big “bumpits” to make her seem taller than her 5’8” frame. She’s simply “Malay-zing” just as she is!

14. Russia - Elmira Abdrazakova

Elmira Abdrazakova of Russia

Elmira Abdrazakova of Russia. A Siberian siren…

Of course, the host nation has to be in the Top 16! The sultry Siberian is a spokesperson for Operation Smile in the Russian territory. Love her lips, but the 5’8’ global economics student needs to keep off the red lipstick — it just makes her pouty lips look more swollen than sweet.

15. Canada – Riza Santos

Riza Santos of Canada. If she and Ariella make it into the Top 5 (or even Top 16) it will be history in making...

Riza Santos of Canada. If she and Ariella make it into the Top 5 (or even Top 16) it will be history in making…

The only other full Pinay competing in Miss Universe aside from Ariella Arida is the representative from Canada, Riza Santos. The 5’8” Canadian queen is proud of her Filipino roots and in her Miss Universe bio, she mentions the work she’s done in the Philippines. (Read: 3 Filipinas in 2013 Miss Universe)

16. Italy – Luna Voce

Luna Voce of Italy. Her name literally means ‘moon voice’…

The boot-shaped nation of Europe sent a 5’9” eye-catcher this year. Luna Voce (yes, even her name is unreal) is often mistaken for an actress. Love the eyes and the body. Viva Italia!

Titi Yitayish Ayanaw of Israel. Ebony in Ivory…

Titi Yitayish Ayanaw, who is originally from Ethiopia, towers over the competition at 5’11”. Although her Web Interview seemed flat, Titi was fabulous in the prelims with her upswept hair and cocoa-colored skin.

 18. Croatia – Melita Fabečić

Melita Fabčeić of Croatia. I can see her on a billboard for Guess...

Melita Fabčeić of Croatia. I can see her on a billboard for Guess…

Melita Fabčeić has an odd beauty that keeps you wanting for more. It must be the tilted Asian eyes and sexy buck-toothed pout. This 18-year-old has jumpstarted a successful modeling career in Milan.

19. Curacao

Eline de Pool of Curacao. The heart-shaped lips are all that matter…

This 5’8” Caribbean queen has a Charlene Gonzales vibe going on. Because of her unique look, Eline de Pool is a stand-out beauty.

20. Kazakhstan

Aigerim Kozhakhanova of Kazakhstan. When she smiles with the dimples, she reminds of of Charice Pempengco…

This one’s a very pretty version of singer Charice Pempengco. The 5’6” Aigerim Kozhakhanova has a smile that can light up a giant stage. But I do hope her being skinny is a natural thing because thin is not always in.

21. Tanzania

Betty Omara of Tanzania. ABQ's favorite African Queen...

Betty Omara of Tanzania. ABQ’s favorite African Queen…

Betty Omara is the most stunning among the African contestants, and seems to be chanelling the biblical Queen of Sheba. The 5’8” fashion model is the second on this list with short hair.

**********

Yep. Venezuela is not on the list and it’s a daring move for me since I’m the type of pageant fan that puts stock in the ‘Sash Factor’ of a country. Venezuela is the leading country when it comes to pageant winners but lately, they’ve been flailing. And, to be honest I’m just not attracted to the Venezuelan candidate’s beauty but she is gorgeous none-the-less. I just hope I don’t kick myself in the butt for not including her in my list… if she wins, LOL!

So that wraps up my list of favorites for the Miss Universe 2013 crown.  We’ll find out on November 9 (November 10, Philippine time) who the winner will be. Will it be one of the girls on this list or will it be a shocking upset?

Whatever the case, it promises to be another exciting edition for the Miss Universe beauty pageant!

Ariella Arida Wins 3rd Runner-Up in Miss Universe 2013!

Viva Ariella Arida!

Viva Ariella Arida!

CHIANGRAI, THAILAND  – In a breath-taking two hour pageant, Ariella Arida of the Philippines conquered yet another beauty title for the nation by placing 3rd Runner-up in the 2013 Miss Universe which just concluded in Moscow, Russia! This placement matches that of Shamcey Supsup in 2011 and gives the Philippines what I believe it’s fifth 3rd Runner-up placement.

For a moment, it seemed like Ariella Arida would win. She was the only Asian in the Top 5; the one girl with straight hair and the lone candidate who did not need a translator during the Q&A segment. But the Latina contingent was too strong and Venezuela reaped the crown with Spain coming in 2nd, Ecuador 3rd, and Brazil 5th.

Now, the pro-translator folks will have some ammo to claim that if Ariella had used a translator, then maybe she would have won. They could be right, they could be wrong; but it is a moot argument because the choice to go without a translator will remain a Philippine pride. We may not have won the crown but we proved that we are brave even when outside of our comfort zone.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to watch a clear video streaming since I am currently in Chiangrai, so I have no idea of what the Q&A was all about but I did see that Ariella answered with confidence and made the audience cheer without restraint.

Congratulations to our girl from Laguna! With your victory, Ariella Arida, the Philippines maintains it’s powerhouse status in the world of pageants!

Jakelyne Oliveira ( Brazil), Constanza Baez (Ecuador), Patricia Yurena Rodriguez (Spain), Ariella Arida (Philippines) and Gabriella Isler (Venezuela)

I have always been torn between these two schools of thought regarding the evening gown competition:

School of thought #1: The gown is so important that it can spell victory or defeat.

School of thought #2: The gown doesn’t make the girl. If she is a winner, she can wear anything and still win.

My belief is a blend of the above: the gown doesn’t make the girl but dress her up anyway in something universally fabulous.

I haven’t hidden the fact that I had mixed feelings (not very good ones) about the Alfredo Barazza gown that Ariella wore. I believe she would have won or placed higher if she had a better gown and maybe a different styling.

One ABQ reader supported my theory by sending this comment which I’d like to repost. According to his figures Ariella was Number 1 in the swimsuit competition but came in second to the last in the evening gown competition. Please remember that the figures listed below are not verified yet so read it with a grain of salt. This comment was sent in by ‘Liquid Days’. Here goes:

Here in the US, apparently you can participate in NBC’s ‘You Be The Judge’ experience by judging the candidates while watching the pageant. You can then compare your ratings with the actual judges’ ratings. In other words, we now get to see the judges’ scores! I have copied the judges’ scores posted in one of the message threads at the United States Beauty board (at voy.com) and pasted them below. I hope these are accurate. Note Miss Philippines’ score on evening gown and it might partly answer the question you posed in this blog post.

I was hesitant about posting them here because I did not want to spread any misinformation, but I thought it was most relevant to your question. Also, several individuals who participated in the ‘You Be The Judge’ experience seem to verify the scores in that message thread I mentioned, so I suspect the numbers are accurate. I tried to confirm the information by trying to participate but it looks like I couldn’t anymore because the TV broadcast already ended here in the Midwest. I believe those in the West coast can still participate since the broadcast may not have started yet.

Regardless, we are very proud of Ara! Thank you, Joyce!

Dear ABQ Readers:

With Ara’s fantastic finish at fourth in the Miss Universe 2013 beauty pageant which concluded on Nov. 9, 2013 in Russia, let me celebrate by publishing a pre-Universe interview I had with her before she left for Moscow. I never got to publish it because I had just gotten too busy with a student film and then a teaching mission in Thailand, where I am right now.

This interview took place in August during Cindy Miranda’s send-off to the Miss Tourism Queen International 2013. However, the photos are from Ariella’s own send-off. Hope this isn’t too confusing.

Anyway, I can’t tell you just how proud I am of our girls; from Venus to Shamcey and Janine to Ariella! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

Love Joyce

Joyce: What was your childhood like?

ARA:  It was a very simple childhood and a happy one. I grew up in Laguna with my family. My life is very monotonous. No intense hardships. My childhood was really different from my life now. During gradeschool I used to compete not in beauty pageants but in sports. I wore rubber shoes, Jerseys, jogging pants… I didn’t know how to wear heels and put on make up . I was teased, specially during my high school days I was teased for never wearing sleeveless until my graduation.  I used to wear jeans and a shirt until college. I took up Chemistry in UP Los Banos so most of my subjects have laboratory.  So sa lab I can’t wear sleeveless, can’t wear shorts. I always wear jeans and t-shirt.  They never thought that I’m going to be a beauty queen someday…

Joyce: When did you start joining pageants?

ARA: After I finished college, that’s when it started. But (I started becoming interested in pageants) when Miriam won, when I watched her on TV. That’s when I developed a fascination for pageants. Even with modeling, when I watch channels with models, I find it interesting. I just couldn’t imagine then that one day I might do it because it’s so different from what I used to do before.

Joyce: How were you discovered?

ARA: It happened after I finished college when this designer in my hometown found me in a coffee place. Nilapitan lang niya ako, a designer from San Pablo, Noli Pilapil, and he asked me if I’m from where and I told him I’m from Alaminos. He’s a designer and he was in a competition and wanted me to model his designs. I had to ask permission from my mother because it’s a different world and they’re kinda strict about it. Then I told (my parents), “I finished my college already,” which is what they wanted.

After that, I modeled. Many designers saw me and wanted me to join Bb. Laguna. I joined. That’s my first beauty pageant, it was in 2010. I was a semi-finalist. It was my first time to wear 5 in heels. Super-awkward and I didn’t even know how to put on make up.

Joyce: Tell me about your parents.

ARA: My parents are both grade school teachers that’s why they really wanted me to finish school. They wanted me to focus on school and only that.

Joyce: Were they shocked?

ARA: Actually when I won (Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013 Universe), they went down from where they were and at first my Mom said, ‘OMG, I didn’t expect it!”

Joyce: What about your siblings?

ARA: I have one sister. She’s a researcher-entomologist. Very ‘science’ ang mga courses namin, she’s a biologist. It’s really a different world…

Joyce: What will you do with your course afterwards?

ARA: I will use it .Before I joined (Bb. Pilipnas) I was working selling chemicals in the food industry. When I have money from all of this I really plan to put up a business, my own perfume line. That’s my plan with my friends even before. Perfume. Its accessible. It’s possible. It can be done.

Joyce: Speaking of your friends, what’s their reaction to your new life as a beauty queen?

ARA: (Laughs!) Hindi sila makapaniwala, tutoo ba?

Joyce: So what are you hobbies?

ARA: Me, I do love the outdoors! You can ask me spontaneously to go to the beach and I’ll go with you without preparing. One time I  went to this virgin island without a decent CR (bathroom) and survived. You can send me anywhere! I actually planned to join Survivor, Fear Factor, Amazaing Race; that’s what I wanted to do. Sobrang outdoors-y ako then all of a sudden, Beauty Queen!

Joyce: How is your training for Miss U coming along?

ARA: Right now it’s been intense unlike before I can rest. I can get to chill but now that Cindy is leaving the attention is with me. I’m here everyday here in Araneta for training.

Joyce: Grabe ba ang pag-strategize for Miss U?

ARA: I’m just thankful that I know myself more. That will be my advantage. Shamcey and Venus say its so important to know who you are, especially your roots and where you come from because when you get there that’s where you will pull from especially during the closed-door interview. That’s really a big impact.   Everybody is beautiful but what will make stand out is your personality. That’s what the judges want to see. So its really important that you know who you are and you have to have your own stand.

Joyce: Have you seen your competitors…

ARA: Actually I find this year competitive talaga. Especially with the looks. From the start they’ve been doing hotpicks and Ive been tagged. Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Spain. Miss France looks Pinay.

(Note from ABQ: Puerto Rico entered the semi-finals. Venezuela won. Spain was 1st runner-up. France was unplaced but still hot.)

Joyce: Do you think you have a Latina vibe?

ARA: People say that about me. But I’m a pure Filipina, I think that’s my one advantage. I noticed the candidates are brunettes now.

Beautiful, stunning and captivating! Thank you Ariella Arida for showing us that you CAN!

Beautiful, stunning and captivating! Thank you Ariella Arida for showing us that you CAN!

Joyce: And do you have a special walk like Shamcey and Janine?

ARA: I have a special walk but it’s just called – the Miss Universe walk. They (Bb. Pilipinas) don’t want to give it a name. (But its a walk) that will separate me from the other candidates!

Well, Ara Arida certainly stood out from all the other girls in the Top 5 of the 2013 Miss Universe Top 5 – she was the only one in a bright colored gown, the only straight-haired beauty, the only Asian AND the only one who answered without the need for a translator. Although she placed 4th, many feel that her answer in the Q&A portion should have gotten her a higher placement if not the crown itself. ARRIBA ARIDA! Congratulations!!!

Now that Ara is done with her pageant, all eyes are now on Bea Santiago who will be the final Bb. Pilipinas winner to compete abroad. She will represent the country in the Miss International 2013 this December.

(Don’t you just love it that the accusation that Ara was racist has been put to death by the photo above? After she made a comment that ‘Latinas couldn’t complete a sentence in English’, as a way of defending her own English skills, a certain personality who loves to offend people got offended himself and on behalf of all Latinas accused Ara of all kinds of things.  He seemed to have ignored the fact that in the same interview Ara identified 3 Latinas (Venezuela, Spain and Puerto Rico) as her main rivals for the crown. So much for being racist, huh.)

CHIANGRAI, THAILAND – The most beautiful Asian in the ‘Universe’ is coming home triumphant today after a 2-week stint in Russia that gave the Philippines it’s fifth 3rd Runner-up prize in the Miss Universe beauty pageant. Ariella “Ara” Arida’s homecoming party is set for the early evening today and I feel terrible for being so far away on a teaching trip and unable to be part of the welcoming festivities.

But distance won’t stop me from honoring Ariella. Here’s is an article published yesterday (Nov. 11) by Rappler that my dear friend (and human encyclopedia of pageants) Lex Librea wrote, with a little help from me. It’s a walk through and analysis of the Miss Universe 2013 beauty pageant. In it we talk about Ariella Arida’s performance and share our thoughts on the other contestants.

Safe flight home Ariella and God speed...

Ariella with Bulgaria’s candidate right before Ara left Moscow. Safe flight home and God speed…

How did I do in terms of predicting the winners? TERRIBLY! Unlike my near-accurate predictions for Miss World 2013, I got low marks for MU which leads me to believe that what some fans have been saying about the pageant – that’s it’s anybody’s guessing game – is true.

But my main prediction that Ariella would enter the Top 5 was on the mark. I also was right about Spain, Puerto Rico, Ukraine and the USA. My other prediction that the winner would most likely come from the Latina contingent was also correct with the Venezuelan win by Gabriela Isler.  My comment that the Latinas were a strong force to reckon with was seen in the Top 5 with four of them being Hispanic.

My hubby commented – ‘thank God for Ariella; she prevented an Asian shut-out in the pageant.’

So true!

Thanks Ariella Arida for all the sacrifices you made and the hard work you put into winning the 2013 Miss Universe beauty pageant. We know that you did it #forthePhilippines!!!

It’s been 6 days since MJ Lastimosa became our newest Miss Philippines Universe as I write, and I’m still feeling the thrill! So here’s a post of my best photos of her taken on the night she was crowned. Enjoy!

“Mom, I hope MJ wins!”

About 22 hours before this North Cotabato/Davao beauty was crowned, I was chatting with my daughter Diandra on Skype. Diandra has ALWAYS been a major major fan of MJ. When MJ lost in 2012, my baby girl and I were so upset. Anyway, I was telling my daughter about how gorgeous the girls were this year and she said, “Mom, I hope MJ wins!” Well, she got her wish! MJ Lastimosa IS Miss Philippines Universe 2014!

The Biggest Spoiler of the Night?

One ABQ reader asked me this question: Most of the other forums (if not all) and pageant-related blogs including yours were not able to pick MJ as their universe. she’s not even in your top 5 knowing that she is a pageant veteran. Can you tell us your reason?

While I do adore MJ and have written many many times on why I love her, I did not think she’d win because I felt there were politics going on and that there were certain biases against her that would diminish her chances. But I was wrong!

Here’s the best explanation from one of my readers, Jay the Pogi, who felt exactly the same way:

In the end…… MJ was the biggest ‘spoiler’ of the night…. she is the girl that we all thought can win but will most likely not win… she is that girl who has all the qualities of a winner- but we all thought may not get it for whatever reason.

I have to say Im guilty of this mistake…. but was still hoping for MJ to get just about anything for the finals… and then she won MUP 2014, even Shamcey was crying :-) you can feel that everybody is happy even those who felt that she will not win MUP… and because we all wanted to be wrong……. and we were all happy to be wrong :-)

MJ on her Haters…

Well, what is life without haters? They will always be there so might as well embrace them. Because they are wasting their time reading something about you. It means that you’re running through their head. – MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

Best in Swimsuit Winner!

For the first time ever, MJ Lastimosa wins the Best in Swimsuit award. The first time she joined Bb. Pilipinas in 2011, the award went to Queenierich Rehman. When she joined again in 2012, the swimsuit honor went to Nicole Schmitz. This year, MJ won the award and it sure is much deserved!  I think when she goes to the Miss Universe 2014 (it was supposed to be in Brazil but that’s been cancelled) she will score big in the swimsuit competition.

Note that Binibini Batch 2011 has given us 3 Miss Philippines-Universe titleholders – Shamcey Supsup, Janine Tugonon and now MJ Lastimosa. 2011 was truly a super batch!

MJ’s Winning Q&A

That MJ Lastimosa would end up with judge Gabriela Isler as her ‘questioner’ – was that luck or destiny? Since I think very little of luck, I believe MJ was destined to get Gabriela who is our reigning Miss Universe 2013. The question was also very graciously answered by MJ.

Question from Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler: March is the women’s month. For you, what is the greatest advantage of being a woman?

Bb. #25 Mary Jean Lastimosa: The greatest advantage of being a woman is being able to compose herself. Just like here, we’re standing in front of thousands of people, not knowing if you’re going to cheer for us or boo us. But we try to compose ourselves. We keep the emotions and show the beauty that is in us and tonight, thousands of people are standing here, celebrating the beauty of women.

What I really liked about her answer is that it’s not a common one. I have never heard of anyone else choosing ‘composure’ as the greatest advantage of being a woman. (Correct me if  I’m wrong, guys!)  But it is so true. I agree that our ability to keep calm and composed in the midst of uncertainty (and even danger) is one of the greatest advantages of being a woman. We know how to hold our own!

MJ’s Winning Moment!

MJ Lastimosa’s winning moment was precious and my wonderful hubby Ron caught it all on cam! When they announced her name, the audience went into a roaring wild frenzy. I was jumping in my seat and my co-blogger Domz (check out his blog here) was screaming at the top of his lungs. We hugged in joy and joined the crowd in cheering for MJ’s vindication and win!

“Now I can say that I am a risk-taker!” – MJ

MJ Lastimosa was a crowd favorite that night garnering thunderous applause every time it was her turn on stage. I think people were amazed that she had decided to give Bb. Pilipinas a third and last try so the applause was not just for her stunning beauty but for her bravery as well. I heard rumors that some people close to her told her to forget about Bb. Pilipinas because it was too late, she would not win. But she also had friends that encouraged her to give it one more shot. It was the latter group that convinced her to try again.

(Joining a 3rd time) was a last-minute decision for me. That was around late December (2013). I was hesitant. I was praying a lot, am I going to join or not. A lot of friends were telling me, when I was in the States, that they adjusted the age limit in Bb. Pilipinas. It was a tough decision, one of the toughest in my life. I’m not the usual risk-taker but now I can say that I am a risk-taker. Some people made me realize that I have it. That I have the qualifications to be a Miss Universe. – MJ Lastimosa at her first press conference as Miss Universe Philippines 2014.

A Haunting Moment…

In this scene we see Pia Wurtzbach in the background, still smiling in the midst of her loss. What is haunting to me is that Pia here is living up to the very same words that MJ had just spoken that evening – that the greatest advantage of being a woman is being able to compose yourself. Such wisdom from MJ and such strength from Pia. I love them both so much! (Click here to read Pia’s post Bb. Pilipinas message.)

The New Queens Rejoice!

The queens are caught in different modes of joy – MJ Lastimosa is overwhelmed as Kris Tifanny Janson (Intercontinental) happily envelopes her in a sisterly embrace. Bianca Guidotti (International), in the dark blue gown is beaming from ear to ear and about to join the hug. On the left is Parul Shah (Tourism) who looks so pleased while Yvethe Santiago (Intercontinental) in light blue gestures to runner-up Laura Lehmann as if to say, ‘let’s join in the group hug and celebrate!’

Wait! No pictures til I get my crown back!

I was so busy taking photos that I did not realize there was a moment when MJ Lastimosa had her crown off. I just love her gesture here asking for a quick break until the crown is back on her head. In the foreground are the rabid photographers who rushed the stage to take their group shot. I was one of them, LOL!

This is like 3 years in the making! During the competition I would always imagine myself winning the Universe crown and nothing else. But I didn’t expect the feeling would be this happy. Finally, God heard my prayers! – MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

Mary Jean Lastimosa, Miss Universe Philippines 2014

26-year-old North Cotabato native Mary Jean Lastimosa is an entrepreneur. A personal advocate of staying fit, she successfully established her own slimming center in Davao.

Growing up in a war-torn province, she developed values of determination and courageousness, and this is something she brought to her personal life, her career and her journey to the Bb. Pilipinas crown.

Bb. Pilipinas Unvierse 2004 Maricar Balagtas is her inspiration for joining the pageant again because Maricar joined three times before winning. Whenever MJ feels down, she looks to Maricar and thinks that if she was able to do it then so can she.

On her free time, she loves working out at the gym, traveling, modeling, dancing and surfing social media websites.”

Can MJ Win Miss Universe?

Why do I think we have an excellent Miss Universe rep in MJ Lastimosa?

Firstly – the Miss Universe Organization was here in Manila in the person of MUO President Paula Shugart when MJ won. Even if Paula did not sit on the board of judges, Gabriella Isler, the reigning MU winner was a judge and to my mind it’s impossible that they would be here and NOT have a hand in choosing the girl they felt would do best in this year’s Miss Universe.

The next reason – MJ Lastimosa has been tempered by loss. She has been humbled by it. She knows what defeat tastes like. And to her, this crown was three years in the making; almost like a college degree! Three years plus the risk of losing again is a HUGE investment. So I believe MJ is going to cherish her win and work hard for the Miss Universe 2014 crown. I do not doubt it!

Third reason – She is a complete beauty queen package. Her stunning body, Latina-flavored beauty and gracious way of answering questions will surely catch the attention of judges at the Miss Universe.

Lastly – she is backed by Filipino pageant fans who love her and you know just how crazy they can be! Expect a full-force of supporters online that will show their fierce love for MJ. Such a huge following will be difficult to ignore by the organizers of Miss Universe.

I do believe that we have a big chance of winning the elusive Miss Universe crown this year!

MJ on the Possibility of Winning MU:

What I’ve been asking from my supporters are prayers because I’ve believe that’s the most powerful thing in the universe. Now I’ll be asking (you) to pray for me because I believe if the whole country will pray for me then the Miss Universe crown will ours. – MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

Ms. Gabriella Isler to MJ Lastimosa “What is the greatest advantage of being a woman?”

MJ Lastimosa Answered: It is being able to compose ourselves, just like here, we’re standing in front of thousands of people not knowing if they will cheer for us… we compose ourselves and show the beauty within us.
